Autonomous Driving in Volvo Cars

Even with greater improvements in traffic and road safety conditions, about 1.2 million people die on the road every year. This concern has spurred Volvo car manufacturing company to launch its safety vision, stating "that no one should be killed or seriously injured in their new Volvo car by 2020," through pioneering technologies, which involve extensive use of driver support systems to help realize this vision and, at the same time, bring strong societal and consumer benefits.

Today's car industry is confronted with future challenges, such as safety improvement in traffic congestion, impaired mobility in congested areas, and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions to reduce pollution and help in the climate change advocacy. With these challenges in mind, Volvo has addressed the car safety concerns, as their long-standing and human-centric approach and commitment, by introducing their new car technology, which they term as "autonomous driving." This new development allows the car to act automatically to avoid accidents and to ensure that the car will not crash at all. The first steps that were initiated into this development were the introduction of auto braking system, lane keeping aid, and adaptive cruise control. The company is moving towards a higher degree of autonomous driving, especially in normal traffic situations.

Their Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with steer-assist automatically maneuvers the autonomous-driven Volvo car ahead in queues. Their other feature is the road edge and barrier detection, still with steer-assist, which detects if the car is about to drive off the road and, when the car does, it autonomously applies steering torque to bring the car back on track. Volvo, with safety vision in mind, is pursuing a new dimension of driving, which is their next step for highly autonomous cars, and that is handing over the responsibility of driving to the car, making it possible for the vehicle to perform all driving functions at the driver's discretion. This self-driving technology is a car project partnership between Volvo Car Group, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, and the City of Gothenburg. Autonomous driving technology is breaking grounds with the way we look at driving cars. The benefits come as follows: a driver will be able to plan his drive with a mix of autonomous and active driving, allowing for efficient use of his daily journey; a driver can safely interact via phone or tablets and simply relax; and this paves the way for more efficient time management behind the wheel. Autonomous driving, with steering, acceleration and braking automatically that is controlled by the car and which requires very little human intervention is a revolutionary Paul Moak Volvo concept that will change the mind-sets of all people in the years to come.
